The talented and well-known actor Neels van Jaarsveld needs no introduction. Recently married and now living in our corner of the world, we jumped at an opportunity to ask him a few questions.
Neels, how are you doing? Are you two settled in and at home here in the Overberg?
Hi! It is going well. We are indeed settled in and we are absolutely crazy about the Overberg.
What do you enjoy the most about living and making a home here in our region?
The scenery. The climate. The combination of the mountains & the sea. The golf courses.
You are soon to be seen on stage with your Afrikaans one-man show, “OP MY EISH”.
What is the piece about and who should come to watch?
Well, it’s an autobiographical piece based on my life up until now. Tongue in cheek and unfeigned. A show everybody can come and see! En dis lekker Afrikaans, natuurlik.
You are very open and honest about your life and past in “OP MY EISH”.
Is it difficult to share so much with the audience?
Being sincere and honest is very important to me. I deliberately chose to take this route. Yes, it remains difficult, but I have to say, at the same time it is very liberating. In essence, it is a light piece, cheerful, funny and spiced with a big handful of honesty.
Neels, since we are diving into the depths of truth for the moment.
How are you doing on the golf course and what is your handicap these days?
Standing at 10, but my goal for 2018 is to reach the single figures. Golf is very liberating to me.
An overall escape. It makes me happy.
What do you think of the courses around here?
The Overberg boasts some excellent courses. We are especially privileged to have a very challenging course in Kleinmond. The temperamental greens & slanting fairways will definitely test the best players out there. Arabella remains a favourite. Breath-taking, world class, top quality. A must play for any golfer.
Right, we have talked about the golf and the eish… Let me ask you something about life with your wife Jeanne. Is it a marriage made on the fairway? Do you two play together?
When we first met we played a lot of golf. Taking on golf trips and exploring courses and places in our wonderful country. It was amazing. My wife has a lovely athletic & stylish swing. A natural.
She, unfortunately, doesn’t get out there too often anymore. But hopefully, one day she will return.
Golf is too special a game to only try once.
The all-important last question. What is the most beautiful thing your wife ever told you?
That I am really unique. One of a kind.
